We talked with:

Andrea Freeman, Certified Coach and Executive Director of ABCLD (Association of British Columbia Library Directors)

Vera Keown, Certified Coach, Organizational Development Librarian, University of Manitoba & IFLA Coach

Christie Koontz, School of Information, San Jose State University and Florida State University & IFLA Coach

They explore the difference between coaching and therapy and mentoring, and the principles that should guide any coaching process and relationship. Andrea described BCLA’s (British Columbia Library Association) coaching initiative and Vera and Christie talked about IFLA’s program – translated into 7 languages! They then explored the power of asking questions referring to several great books on the topic (The Book of Beautiful Questions: The Powerful Questions That Will Help You Decide, Create, Connect, and Lead, and Gallup’s StrengthsFinder series).

Quoting an HBR study: “Asking questions is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members.”
