Even better than last year’s pic for Earth Day. Thanks Google. Makes my day; especially the coral & undersea world combined with the green & waterfall. So peaceful, don’t you want to live there? Yippee, it’s spring, finally! I’ve seen a robin and the cardinals are in the backyard. It’s been a bright sunny week — love it. And there are only a few patches of ice and snow in shady corners. But the best part is today’s Google pic by illustrator Eric Carle. His most famous book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is celebrating its 40th anniversary and today’s Google pic features this famous character. As youngsters my kids loved his books and Brown Bear, Brown Bear was also one of their favs. If you need gifts for little ones, these are fabulous. And if you have a little one to ready with, have fun with them. Thanks, as always, Google for the great pics. I love ‘em. The first FastForward conference since Microsoft purchased FAST Technology for 1.2 billion opened with lots of light an music and about 1,000 attendees from 29 countries. It reflects a strong commitment, vision, and roadmap for search. Today, Microsoft released information about new search products: FAST Search for SharePoint which is the old FAST ESP tuned for SharePoint available at lower cost through SharePoint enterprise user-based licensing (a simplified package based on per uers licensing) that will be availalbe with the release of Office 14. However, for those who want to get started right away, Microsoft will provide a licensing bridge for SharePoint clients, ESP for SharePoint. Another new product, FAST Search for Internet Business, which will also be released with Office 14 and then roughly annually going forward, includes interaction management to help drive revenue for users, content integration and simplified licensing. For more info on these new products, check here.
Continue reading FastForward 2009 I’m working away on my pet project & keen interest-area, Organization 2.0 — how organizations are evolving their structures, approaches, roles and responsibilities (plus governance, accountabilities, etc.) to truly leverage collaborative 2.0 tools and technologies. By the way, some of you should be prepared since I’m about to embark on a series of interviews to see how organizations are coming along with this evolvement or if, in fact, you’re experiencing more “stalledment”…. And I come across a link to the “Chief Happiness Officer” , Alexander Kjerulf, who writes and speaks on the importance of happiness in the workplace. This isn’t a new concept by any means, but it is one that most organizations try for a bit, particularly around the time of off-site meetings, team building and 360 appraisals, and then “get back to work!” The first time I heard this concept was in the mid 1980′s when the VP I reported to at Imperial Oil Ltd. started to actually DO something about building and maintaining a “happy” work environment. A “happy” work environment? The guffaws were loud and long. An “effective” work environment was the goal — maybe even a “motivating” work environment. But “happy?” Good heavens — if you were aiming for happy you might get sleepy, and we already had enough dopey and grumpy. But he was not deterred and those of us who worked there benefited from the incredible learnings of what it really takes to create and manage a happy work environment. Read the first Continue reading Chief Happiness Officer – now THERE’S a role for organizations’ leadership teams The end of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing (thanks again Google for your wonderful doodles) is signaling for me the fast approach of the fall, a busy conference time — a time for learning, sharing knowledge, celebrating accomplishments with colleagues, netowrking with new people, and gaining new insights. KMWorld & Intranets 2008, September 23-5, as well as Enterprise Search Summit West , September 23-4 and Taxonomy Boot Camp 2008, September 25-6 will soon be held in San Jose. Internet Librarian 2008, the 12th annual conference (amazing isn’t it?), October 20-22 in Monterey will again bring together leaders in information technology, information management, and information services as well as those hoping to be leaders in their organizations. Hope to see you there. Isn’t great to see so many young athletes have an opportunity to represent their countries in Beijing at the Summer Olympics? Belonging to an athletic family who lives to watch the games, it is an exciting time. As were the Ontario Summer Games this past weekend in Ottawa where my daughter coached an under 16 women’s field hockey team to a gold medal. I’m thinking that this Google doodle has a field hockey stick in the net, what do you think? To have a look at more of the wonderful Google doodles for the 2008 Olympics, look here. What’s your favorite? It’s hard to pick one, I love the basketball, ping pong, swimming, rowing, badminton — well, all of them really! Thanks Google. Well there is just so much I could say about hot air and balloons but I’m just going with this fun Google doodle today in honor of the first hot air ballon flight. Further to my post last week about the Google competition for K-12 students, here is the winner of the contest. Since we seem to have gone from long, cold winter where I live to a rainy, cool spring, I agree this is great! Thanks Google for encouraging students to share their artistic insights.
