Technology & Generations

Interesting article from PCWorld.ca, on how to make the tech generation gap help your small business (or I say, any organization). Although there may be clashes, it may help IT planning.

A new survey by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Microsoft Canada Co.”of Canadian small-medium businesses shows that 63% of SMBs are multi-generational, and that 52% of SMBs see technology as the key factor in sustaining business and growth beyond current ownership.” Here are some other highlights —

Priorities for experienced small business owners (55+):

A security solution that ensures my data is safe and not at risk — 59%A backup tool to ensure their business records are safely stored — 57%A contacts/address book in my email application to keep track of business records within their organization — 47%

Priorities for Younger generation entrepreneurs (18 to 34):

A website that helps raise awareness of my business offerings both locally and globally — 53%Mobile devices to help employees stay connected — 50%Customer relationship management software — 38%

The 18-34 Gen-X and Gen-Y crowd list their top three concerns as building business websites (53%), having mobile devices for employee networking (50%), and using sophisticated customer relationship management software (38%).

2017: Tech for Home, Office, Road

Apparently Grace, the universal remote of the future, is the name of the system that will co-ordinate the lights, security, air conditioning, PCs, home entertainment and kitchen appliances. Your clothes will all have RFID (radio frequency identification) tags so that the washer can download the correct washing intructions and clean your clothes accordingly. The RFID tags will also work with the food in your refrigerator and pantry so you’ll know what’s there and also when things hit their expiry dates. There will also be Intelligent spoons and “counter” intelligence including a silcone sink that won’t break your dishes if dropped. Also, robots that will care for the elderly. And just imagine the uses for the driverless car supposed to be ready by 2020.

This comes from an article from Maclean’s Magazine, Oct 8/07 who also write that by 2017, experts predict that computers will respond well to voice command as well as body movements and facial gestures. In ten years the mouse, keypad and phone dial will go and the screens will be next as you’ll be able to see without using your eyes. And thirty years from now you’ll be able to do full communication over the Net, both input and output, just by thinking!

It’s always fun to see other libraries isn’t it?

Canoe at Timmins Public Library

Opened in 2005, the new building of the Timmins Public Library has very tall ceilings and a handmade canoe hanging from the ceiling! The tree shaped timbers (wooden columns) definitely fit the landscape of Northern Ontario (see above).
