What fun to be at a wedding with lots of people from our industry. Can you believe several of them were twittering before the wedding? What a terrific day — Sunday May 6th — I was honoured to share a special day with Gary & (now) Lisa Price. Don’t they look happy?

Today Aaron Schmidt talked to the Education Institute via webcast. He talked about social networks which allows people to connect, collaborate, and communicate over the web. It injects humanness into the way and enables two-way communication. Friending is different online than in person, much more flexible online. Aaron referred to the MacArthur report on Confronting the Challenge of a Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century. I keep meaning to get this publication! Aaron showed lots of great examples of libraries in the MySpace including one with a search box which links to their catalogue. I loved Aaron’s comment about MySpace being like the wild wild west whereas Facebook has more rules. Again he showed some great examples of librarians interacting with their university students through Facebook. Have a look at his slides. Aaron talked about how these sites are valuable, a step in right direction, but we also need to create our own social networks like My Own Cafe which includes profiles, avatars, music from local bands, interaction with people, and participation automatically gives authentication into library. Hennepin County Library’s Bookspace is more for adults and you now can upload photos of you reading a book. These are great ways to create warm and fuzzy feelings online. Another new tool Aaron mentioned is about Elgg, which he noted in a new Wired article, which is an open source software for making your own social netowrking site – a personal learning environment.
